Two Months Later…..

Oh, love.

As one of my favorite 80s bands says “Love Bites”. Can you name that band? Love is also really wonderful. What would be the opposite of “love bites”? Love…everything I’m thinking of is inappropriate….ok, I’m going to google the opposite of “bites”.

I’m back. Apparently there is no opposite of “bites”, but the synonyms are pretty funny. If you can find an opposite, tell me.

My album, No Will Power is about the unraveling of a romantic relationship at its every stage, not necessarily in chronological order.

I’ve mentioned Go Find Her in an earlier email. I started this song and then let it sit in my “song ideas” file cabinet for a year. Maybe I wasn’t actually ready to let go.  I took it to a session with my friend, Mike Busbee, and we finished it in the carriage house he was renting.

The first thing I wanted to do was to play it for the man for whom I had written it. I was nervous because now I was making it real that I was letting go of him forever. I got up the courage to call him and held the phone to my ear and started to play the piano and sing…he listened and cried when he heard it…and then got engaged to someone else two months later.

It was something I hadn’t yet been able to say, and the song said exactly what I meant….I wanted him to be happy and successful, but I didn’t need to see how well he was doing without me.  Needless to say, after his engagement, I was not feeling quite as generous.

I wanted to think he was missing me the way that I was missing him (Miss Me). Even when it is the right thing to do, even when you know you don’t make each other better (We Deserve More), ending an important relationship is difficult….and sometimes can take a few tries…(No Will Power).

In case you don’t have the song, you can download it at iTunes or get a physical copy here: http://KatParsons.com/Shop/ . From my album, “No Will Power”.

Some songs are fictional, some have a real history. If “Go Find Her” is your signature song, it’s because your audience has felt something like this, and recognizes a common bond. We all move on in our own way. It’s one of my favourite (yes,I’m Canadian) of all time. Thanks for the story. Oh, and by the way, go ahead and sell this for a movie soundtrack…we won’t be mad.

You’ve converted your love bites into love bytes. That’s kind of wonderful for everyone.

wow, that comment I just wrote is really nerdy, and hence the omission of a name.

    Hi Kat,

Fred laughs when he hears about my school’s prom. I think there were nearly 300 in his class. I attended a school in a little village – Albany, Ohio, for 12 years. There were only 31 in the graduating class.

I am 6′ tall. My neighbor, Charles Woodyard, was tall – 6’6″. His mother strongly suggested that Charles give me a ride to the prom, which he grudgingly did.

I wore a purple full circle cotton skirt with crinoline slip and a cotton blouse, bobby socks and penny loafer shoes.
The prom was mostly a square dance (Southeastern Ohio style) held in the school gym. The band played a few slow numbers, but no one got up on the floor and danced during those numbers.

One couple danced a jitterbug while the rest of us watched in wonder.

The refreshments were sloppy joe sandwiches and coke.

Charles did give me a ride home afterwards, for which I am grateful. 10 miles would have been a long walk home.

I saw Charles and his wife, Betty, at the 56th Class Reunion, Class of 1955, in May of 2011 at the new high school – Alexander Township School. Charles is much friendlier to me now. and when we recalled that he was coerced into taking me to the high school prom, he replied, “That wasn’t so bad!”

    Love,
    Norma

I want to see that outfit! Do you have pictures? A purple skirt?! That’s the best! And the end of this story is so sweet. Thank you for sharing!

Yes, I do have a picture of me wearing that purple skirt. It is a black and white photo print, so you will have to use your imagination. Did I mention that the skirt had huge plaid pockets? I don’t know how to post the photo here.
