What matters to US?

Inspired by the upcoming release of my new album “It Matters to Me”, I started thinking:

What matters to YOU?

YOU matter to ME. Here’s something else that matters to me:

Right now I am writing from D.C. where I am working in the anti-human trafficking
movement. I’ve had the honor of working with survivors, who despite the
heartbreaking nature of their circumstances have taught me so much about resilience.

Is there a cause or organization that you feel passionate about? Some way of life
you love?

So, while I contain my jitters for a week anticipating the release of the
new album, I’ve created a page SOLELY for raising awareness for
what matters to US!

Leave a comment with a link, a cause, whatever you like. It doesn’t have
to be something huge- a smile can matter to you! And SHARE the page on
facebook, twitter, email, etc. to raise awareness for what matters to US.
I’ve started it below!

I’m really looking forward to hearing from you.
With love, Kat

I first learned about human trafficking while I was touring internationally and saw it first hand. Upon educating myself further, I learned how often people are bought and sold all over the world, including the U.S. Victims are “trapped in lives of misery—often beaten, starved, and forced to work as prostitutes or to take grueling jobs as migrant, domestic, restaurant, or factory workers with little or no pay.” -FBI. So many things matter to me.
Nature and all the beauty and power it possesses – the sounds of waves washing up on shore, a warm summer wind or even a star-filled, dark night sky; family, friends, community and the love and support they can offer; the kindness of strangers, the compassion of those that care and the strength of those who fight for the ones who need it; art, music, song and the happiness, healing and urge to dance they bring; lessons of history learned and those sadly forgotten; culture, language and individuality; wisdom and foolishness; most important – the laugh, smile and embrace of the one I love.

Thank you Kat for sharing your music and your passion with us all,
Many things from the simple wonders of creation to our relationships with creation, each other, the Holy, and ourselves matter to me. At the core I find a sense and a call to seek to uplift the inestimable worth of all persons, to work toward healing broken relationships, and end injustice. At times expressed through sitting and being with one near life’s end, or is facing uncertainty in life, or has lost a loved one. At times it is through speaking from the pulpit, or in the public square, about injustices that should not be, be it human trafficking, poverty, environmental destruction, war, hunger… All issues, which resonate with me. World Hunger has become a significant issue for me in recent years as I have found myself stepping out of my comfort zone and doing political advocacy work, including visiting my Senators and representative in DC, my state legislature here in OR, writing letters, making phone calls, and learning more and more about Hunger and related issues both at home and around the globe…. even writing a letter to the editor. Often working with others through non partisan advocacy groups such as Bread for the World and various other interfaith and ecumenical groups. I would recommend checking them out (yes I am a bit biased as the trained me as a Hunger Justice Leader last year and I am part of their Oregon team of volunteers) they have a lot of information about hunger and the impact of government policy.
I dream of the day when Hunger, poverty, war, human trafficking are a distant memory… Thank you Kat once again for all you do, and sharing your awareness and passion, it is much harder to end the injustice if no one says (or sings) about it,
    Peace,
    Lyle

What a wonderful lot of things that matter! Thank you for sharing Lyle- it sounds like you’ve done some great work- I love hearing about it. How awesome that you visited your Senators and representative. It may sound strange but helping with hunger very much ties into human trafficking, in that it hopefully creates less vulnerability for people. Keep it going, Lyle and thanks for sharing!
